ACRONYMS - ENGLISH ↔ FRENCH
A variety of bilingual lists of acronyms compiled from Canadian sources covering glossaries, abbreviations and acronyms related to domestic and international terminology. Canadian Government websites provide terminology in both official languages (English and French) thus providing a quick and accurate reference for translators.
ACRONYMS - UNILINGUAL
Websites listing acronyms compiled from a variety of sources. Our list is short. Keeping track of various government website glossaries and compilations of acronyms has become a virtually pointless exercise since links to such sites are notoriously short-lived. We suggest that users navigate to a particular organization's website and use the search function for the words "glossary" or "acronym" to find the required term. However, YourDictionary.com has an extensive index of online acronym resources, including the Acronym Finder listed below.
- The Acronym Finder website contains over " ...600,000 human-edited definitions, [and] is the world's largest and most comprehensive dictionary of acronyms, abbreviations, and initialisms. Combined with the Acronym Attic, Acronym Finder contains more than 4 million acronyms and abbreviations. You can also search for more than 850,000 US and Canadian postal codes."
- Canadian Government Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Initialisms: Selected list compiled by the Laurier Library. Entries have been found in government publications, in paper and on the Internet, in general directories, periodicals and newspapers. Letter-by-letter alphabetical arrangement is used, without punctuation and spacing between letters.

ENGLISH ↔ FRENCH TRANSLATION TIPS |
Finding English-French equivalents on Government of Canada websites.
Time-Saving Tip #1: Using the Google Canada search engine (i.e. google.ca), perform a search on the word, expression or sentence and confine your search to the "Search: pages from Canada" option for optimal results. (In other words, click on the "Search: pages from Canada" radio button before executing your search.) Adding the expression +gc.ca to the search string may also prove helpful in narrowing the search results.
Time-Saving Tip #2: If the page you have navigated to contains a great deal of text, you can avoid having to read or scroll the whole page by simply searching the page for the expression you are seeking in order to find its relative position. Note: To search a web page, use your browser's Search Capability (not the website's search function).
Time-Saving Tip #3: The process of toggling between English and French pages can be a bit arduous in some instances. One technique that works for us is to open two web pages, one that is kept on the location of the English, while the second is scrolled to find the French equivalent.
