CIF ENGLISH ↔ FRENCH TERMINOLOGY INFORMATION

Much of the CIF-specific terminology and expressions can be found on this client's website that has both English and French versions. (See accompanying links above.)

With respect to official name of the organization, English texts refer to the Canadian Institute of Forestry - Institut forestier du Canada whereas French texts lead off with the French denomination, i.e. Institut forestier du Canada - Canadian Institute of Forestry. The same practice applies to the abbreviated name (acronym), thus the English is CIF/IFC and the French version is IFC/CIF. (Note the use of a forward slash in the acronym, as opposed to a dash.)

The CIF-IFC newsletter, named The Forestry Chronicle has no French name and is refered to in French translations as "Forestry Chronicle" ("The" is dropped). Examples: ... on y fait mention dans un article paru dans le (bulletin) Forestry Chronicle or le dernier numéro du Forestry Chronicle.

Some of the terminology can be found by means of search engines. Other terms can be found in the TERMIUM.

Time-Saving Tip #1: If the page you have navigated to contains a great deal of text, you can avoid having to read or scroll the whole page by simply searching the page for the expression you are seeking in order to find its relative position. Note: To search a web page, use your browser's Search Capability (not the website's search function).

Time-Saving Tip #2: The process of toggling between English and French pages can be a bit arduous in some instances. One technique that works for us is to open two web pages, one that is kept on the location of the English, while the second is scrolled to find the French equivalent.
