THOUGHTS ON SELLING TRANSLATION |
- Market data is way more motivational than product data.
- If you really believe in what you sell, you have the moral obligation to sell it.
- Strategically sell the company, not just the service.
- In the real world of business you have to implement simple strategies consistently. It doesn't have to be complicated. Example: Schedule weekly strategy sessions on new ways to get more buyers.
Thoughts on Sales People
The one greatest fear of sales people is the telephone. They have phone phobia.
Star salespeople have:
- Empathy (sincere interest in others)
- Ego strength and ego drive (for those one-shot calls)
- Superior skill set (highly productive)
- Market knowledge (i.e. beyond product knowledge)
- Training
On hiring top sales people...
- Get them while they're young
- Pay well on performance (little or no base)
- Churn and burn (the best salespeople should get the best leads)
- No matter how small you are, you can get others to help you
On the Stadium Pitch
What can you say that will focus a stadium audience on: buying now, being open to your message, not be thinking about something else, not thinking that they're not interested or not being interested at all?
90% of any audience is either thinking about something else, thinking that they're not interested or not interested at all in what you have to say. Only 3% are thinking of buying now and only 6% are open to buying now.
The broader the offer, the stronger it's going to be. A great story improves everything. Motivators come from two sources: problems and solutions. Problems are the most compelling motivators.
Set the buying criteria by researching your market data and develop a slogan that contains a benefit, positions the company above the competition and features the buying criteria.

Overview of the Global Language Landscape, Number of Internet Users and Languages in Use on the Worldwide Web
As of June 2008, approximately 1,463,632,361 people worldwide were using the Internet, according to Internet World Stats. Current and accurate data, with respect to internet usage, is somewhat elusive given the rapid growth and spread of the internet. However, useful data can be gleaned from information available in the CIA World Factbook. We feature selected data taken the CIA Factbook on the following Free Translation Classifieds categories: Translation Agencies and Translation Firms. We have listed data by commercial geographic areas in those categories, namely North America; Europe; South America; Asia; and, the Middle East. The figures are segmented for each country listed by total population numbers, languages spoken (numbers and percentages, where available) and number of internet users. The number of countries listed as well as the scope of the data was limited to markets offering commercially viable critical mass.
